A great example of the era when even an everyday office tool was built with real weight, substantial metal construction, and enough style to look at home on an executive desk. This vintage three-hole paper punch has a long, streamlined black metal body topped with a dark faux-woodgrain finish, giving it a distinctive retro office look that is far more interesting than today's lightweight plastic punches.
The construction is especially interesting. Beneath the full-length press bar are three individual spring-loaded punch heads, all operating together to create the standard three-hole pattern used for loose-leaf binders. The bottom incorporates a removable black chip tray for collecting the punched paper circles. The exposed mechanism, metal chassis, and simple mechanical design make this a satisfying piece of old-school office equipment as well as a functional desk accessory.
The punch measures approximately 10.5" long × 2" wide × about 1.7" high and weighs approximately 1.3 lb, giving it considerably more substance than its slim profile suggests.
Research into the construction found an unusually close match to the vintage Clix Model No. 3 paper punch manufactured by New England Paper Punch Co. of Natick, Massachusetts. Documented Model No. 3 examples are nearly identical in size and use the same distinctive three-punch, spring-loaded, full-length lever arrangement. The design is associated with New England Paper Punch Co.'s multi-hole punch patent issued in 1941. However, no readable manufacturer or model marking can be positively verified on this particular example. The faux-woodgrain surface also covers the area where Clix branding appears on known examples, so this punch is being listed without an attributed manufacturer rather than guessing.
The dark brown faux woodgrain against the black metal body gives the piece a great mid-century/retro executive-office aesthetic. It would display nicely with vintage typewriters, desk organizers, staplers, adding machines, and other period office equipment.
Pre-owned vintage condition with visible age-related cosmetic wear, including light scratches, scuffs, small marks, and general surface wear. The removable bottom tray is present, and the three punch assemblies and springs are visible in the photographs. Please review all photos closely for exact cosmetic condition.
An appealing piece for collectors of vintage office equipment, industrial design, desk accessories, stationery tools, or anyone building a retro workspace. It is the kind of ordinary working object that became unexpectedly stylish simply because of how substantially—and attractively—office equipment used to be made.
