Authentic 1983-contract U.S. military cold-weather gear, complete with the removable trigger-finger liners — not just the outer shells.
This is an original U.S. GI M-1965 Cold Weather Trigger Finger Mitten set, size Large, manufactured under a 1983 Defense Logistics Agency contract by Illinois Glove Company. The surviving military label identifies the shells as “MITTEN SHELLS, COLD WEATHER (TRIGGER FINGER M-1965)” and carries NSN 8415-00-926-1527, the U.S. military stock number assigned to the Large M-1965 cold-weather mitten shell.
The M-1965 design is one of the more distinctive pieces of American cold-weather field equipment. Instead of a conventional five-finger glove, the shell separates the index/trigger finger while grouping the remaining fingers together mitten-style. This gave the wearer greater hand warmth while retaining considerably more dexterity than a conventional mitten. The official military specification for the Large shell calls for an olive-green cotton/nylon wind-resistant body, leather palm and thumb, gauntlet-style cuff, adjustable wrist strap, and use with or without removable mitten inserts.
